Video Surveillance for Liability and Operational Awareness
Crime prevention is one reason to install commercial security cameras, but it is not always the primary reason.
For many businesses, liability documentation and operational awareness are more immediate concerns.
A camera system can help management understand the ordinary movement of employees, visitors, contractors, vehicles, deliveries, and vendors. It can also provide documentation when an accident, disagreement, property-damage report, or other incident needs to be reviewed.
Consider a reported slip and fall outside a commercial property. Management may need to determine when the event occurred, what the surface conditions appeared to be, whether anyone else was present, and what happened immediately before and after the incident.
This can be especially relevant in Connecticut, where snow and ice may create seasonal concerns around entrances, sidewalks, loading areas, exterior stairs, and parking lots.
Video does not automatically determine legal responsibility. However, clear footage may help a business or its insurance representatives understand the circumstances surrounding a reported event instead of relying entirely on incomplete recollections.
Operational awareness also matters when no formal incident has occurred. A business may use recorded or live video to review delivery activity, understand traffic patterns, verify when work was completed, investigate an operational problem, or identify areas that require better oversight.
